Farrell discusses increased supports for returning emigrants from Dublin Fingal with Minister McHugh

22/06/2016

Fine Gael TD for Dublin Fingal, Alan Farrell, met with the Minister of State with special responsibility for the Diaspora and Overseas Development, Joe McHugh TD, in Malahide yesterday (Tuesday) to discuss how best to support those from the North County who are living abroad, and those who wish to return home to work.

“I was pleased to welcome Minister McHugh to the North County and I took the opportunity to discuss the need to provide support to those who emigrated during the economic crisis in returning home to work.

“Many people from Dublin Fingal, particularly young people, emigrated over the last number of years to find work. We must now ensure they those who wish to return home are supported in doing so. We must make sure that work pays in order to attract our emigrants home, and one particular issue which I will continue to raise is the need to address childcare costs for working families, and for those who wish to move home to take up employment.

“Furthermore, it is important that we work to ensure that our emigrants remain connected to Ireland and to their home communities. In that regard, I raised the possibility of extending voting rights to emigrants in Presidential elections with Minister McHugh.

“I will continue to actively engage with Minister McHugh, his Department, and my colleagues in Government, to put in place adequate supports for those from the North County who wish to return home to work, particularly in the area of childcare.”
