A visit to Ardgillan – Fingal’s hidden gem

In a departure from the normal politics of this site, I’ve deicded to share with you my Sunday afternoon in Ardgillan Demesne, Skerries, Co. Dublin. (Some say its in Balbriggan, including the Council but their website says Skerries)

I was brought up on a strict diet of hill walking through the countryside with my parents, Edwin & Patricia every weekend.  To this day, my parents remain members of Na Coisithe walking group and because of this upbringing, I love to get out and walk.

Ardgillan Castle, as it likes to be known, is a wonderful castellated home on the Coast due west of Balrothery, in North Fingal. Built in 1738 it isn’t a castle at all, but a fine country residence looking out over the Irish sea and towards the wonderful mountains of Mourne, in County Down. Later 17th century and 18th century additions were made and the house exchanged hands over the years before being sold by a German man called Potts to Dublin Corporation in 1982.

Tours of the house are available, their gardens are on show most of the year and they also have a wonderful children’s playground, they even have a website here

I took some photos with my phone which you might like to look at.

In these straitened times, its nice to know that there is somewhere to go for free with the family.
