Government backed initiative will secure the future of our local post offices

Fine Gael TD for Dublin Fingal, Alan Farrell is pleased with the Government backed initiative to establish a Business Development Group which will secure the future of the Post Office network in Ireland.

“I am glad that the Government has approved the establishment of a Business Development Group which will be dedicated to examining how we can deliver a greater degree of government and commercial business through our local Post Offices.

“This announcement regarding the Business Development Group comes as a result of a Government review of the post office network. Earlier this year, there was a great deal of scaremongering regarding post office closures, however, this Government has a plan to secure the future of our post office network and avoid the need for any closures.

“Post offices are vital to our local communities and, through delivering more government and commercial business through them; we can ensure that they continue to play a fundamental role in towns throughout the North County. The post office network has already adapted extremely well in terms of taking on the social welfare contract as well as offering new services including banking, passport services, tax payment and foreign exchange.

“The Business Development Group will be comprised of representatives from Government, An Post and the Irish Postmasters’ Union, and it will have an independent chairperson. The aim of this group is to increase the level of business undertaken in post offices throughout the country and ensure that the post office network is sustainable, which will remove the risk of any post office closures in Dublin Fingal.

“I am pleased that Government is providing such a strong level of support to our local post offices and I am sure that they will continue to go from strength to strength.”
